In Victor David Hanson’s recent story for the National Review, he talks about how the political climate in today’s world resembles the early 20th century. At that time following WWI in rather quick succession you saw the fall of once great powerful empires; empires like Austro-Hungary, Kaiser Wilhelm’s Imperial Germany, the Ottoman Empire, and Czarist Russia. Due to inattention by the world’s leading governments they were then replaced by even stronger more ruthless empires such as the Soviet Union, Nazi Germany, Mussolini’s Italy, and Imperial Japan. The rise and fall of such empires and the cost to humanity in terms of suffering, property damage, and loss of life cannot be accurately measured nor can the cost be ignored and treated as if its irrelevant ancient history.
It was only through a monumental wholehearted national effort by Western democracies, at great cost and sacrifice by their military combatants and civilians, working in cooperation to meet the threat, did these oppressive regimes finally meet their end.
It is not by accident that we have not seen another global confrontation like WWI or WWII in seventy years. Its not because humanity has somehow become more civilized, far from it. Its just that global peace is obtained only through commitment to strength and not by appearing weak or being weak.
Hanson asserts that in today’s world we are seeing an equally volatile period in history just like the 1930’s and 1940’s largely due to American indifference and perceived weakness by our enemies. During Obama’s watch we have seen the rise of ISIS/ISIL almost immediately after we began withdrawing from Iraq. We see Iran’s subtle and not so subtle influence over the Middle East growing not to mention their appetite to obtain nuclear weapons and to destroy Israel at the right opportunity. As we withdrawal from Afghanistan, the Taliban still assert power there. What is going to stop them from reclaiming what they lost, the shaky Afghan government? Power abhors a vacuum. We are seeing Putin’s Russia reassert its once death grip hold over all of Eastern Europe with Ukraine being its latest victim.
I believe President Obama believes its his mission to remove the USA from its position of authority and world leadership much to our great detriment and the whole world’s. Our withdrawal from the world stage, retreating if you will, will have very bad consequences for us and those nations that resist oppressive anti-Democratic, anti-American, despotic governments.
History has shown Evil does in fact exist in the world and to turn from it and ignore it, or appease it only encourages it to be more audacious, not less dangerous or less threatening. Appeasement only works for those being appeased. Failing for example to name the source of almost all of the current terrorist activity in the world today ” Islamic fundamentalism” (which is rooted in literal interpretation of the Koran), only encourages those fanatics. I think it would be better a few be offended than billions engaged in a global armed conflict.
A position that says let’s not care about what goes on beyond our borders and focus just on our problems here may seem like a good idea on the surface to some. I understand the arguments for isolation, less intervention and domestic focus as I too once held that position. However I think that only invites a very ugly future global confrontation when we will be much weaker to resist the very real threats to our way of life.
Some might want to convince themselves that the evil in today’s world is caused by USA’s inequities in life and our greedy corporations coupled with our intolerance to other cultures. I would argue show me where these other cultures are better or as tolerant. The truth is the world is a very biased, racist, and intolerant place and its those intolerant cultures and countries that are now posing the greatest threats to mankind.
I believe however that appeasement and disengagement is our President and some of his follower’s intention. Somehow he has convinced himself that downsizing our military and abandoning our allies, while simultaneously: supporting or appeasing Islamic-Fascist regimes; removing sanctions for tired old communist regimes like Cuba; permitting China and North Korea to engage in economic and cyber warfare against us daily; and allowing Russia to do what ever it wants without tangible negative consequences for them is somehow in our best interests.
Looking at the world today I really believe Obama appears feckless by design, he’s not that stupid like some would believe. His actions I believe are a portent of a much greater evil to come but that is another story.
For now the average American being comfortable, complacent and compliant with our government’s control over their lives while solely focused on themselves and their issues is not going to keep any of us safe or free. We must stay concerned and engaged on matters inside and outside of our country. We must elect leaders willing to uphold the law, and oppose those who would seek our destruction from within as well as from outside our borders. Those same leaders must resist evil where ever it is, for however long it takes and rally the citizens behind the cause. We need to be fully committed as a nation, and willing to sacrifice for the long haul, just like those Americans from an earlier generation did for only then can we hope to win and survive.
What I’m saying is an all in commitment is necessary with a resolve to take the fight wherever it leads us, to whatever country’s doorstep it may take us. We must resolve to win this war not just co-exist with it or we can expect to be at war forever.
At issue is religious freedom. The Obamacare mandate forces businesses to provide coverage for contraceptive drugs to include drugs and devices that will abort babies.
Hobby Lobby, an arts and crafts store chain was providing 16 of the 20 contraceptive drugs available in the new healthcare law but refused to provide coverage for abortion inducing drugs which is at odds with the owner’s religious beliefs. The story has largely been portrayed by the media as Hobby Lobby refusing all contraception drugs which is just not the case.
The owners of the business feeling they had no choice filed suit against the government’s position and clear disregard for religious freedom . Making the owner choose between accepting the mandate and violating their faith or paying a per-employee penalty which in the case of Hobby Lobby would amount to millions of dollars is worthy of a fight.
Some have argued that the business is a corporation and the owners’ beliefs do not fully represent the stockholders views . The three left leaning women on the Supreme Court questioned how a corporation could be religious.
In my opinion, if a majority of the ownership believes one way then the majority should win the argument. Why is it any different than when a majority ownership decides to buy or sell off a division or take the company in a different direction? The majority ownership always takes the risk that if their decision is so unpopular their employees and stockholders might just leave or sell off their stock interests. Such is the case here too. If Hobby Lobby’s majority owners want to inject their belief system into their business, and they do they’re closed on Sundays for example, they take the risk that others will abandon them. That is their choice and something no government entity or court should be allowed to dictate.
What we are seeing is a good example of the kind of war on freedom the Obama administration and his Democrat supporters wage every day. Putting the state’s needs which they claim are just the poor and needy in front of the individual’s need. It appears that an overwhelming majority are meant to ignore their faith and suffer penalties if they ignore the government’s bullying because a small percentage of the population doesn’t have access to birth control drugs and the ability to kill their babies.
For Obama and his supporters asserting government’s position to that of sovereign over our lives and welfare is their mission and part of his hope and change plan. One doesn’t have to be a member of the Tea Party movement to feel the heel of government oppression on the throat of religious liberty. I reject them and so should you if you believe in religious freedom.
“Don’t tread on me”!
“The jig is up the news is out they’ve finally found me. The renegade who had it made retrieved for a bounty. Never more to go astray, this will be the end today of the wanted man…” . from “Renegade” by Styx
Does anybody have doubts anymore that the IRS and by extension the President was not singling out Tea Party and conservative groups to outrageous levels of scrutiny for political purposes?According to the “official lie” largely debunked local IRS officials in Cincinnati, OH acting on their own initiative targeted conservative groups for added scrutiny. Something by itself was very outside the IRS scope and illegal.
The truth however was Tea Party groups from all across the country have been targeted and have complained of the unfair and illegal actions by the IRS for some time. It was not just the Ohio office and the size and scope of the IRS’s targeting has increasingly become apparent despite the denials from the White House.
Congress has started demanding answers. Just days after issuing her apology, Lerner was called to testify before Congress. In an amazing piece of court room style theater Lerner made an opening statement proclaiming her innocence then pleaded the 5th amendment something that technically cannot be done as once a statement was made she waived her right to plead the 5th. This technicality however was apparently, intentionally overlooked.
Since these revelations have come to light Lerner has fallen on her sword and resigned from the IRS (and now receiving taxpayer pension). She’s also recently been called back to testify again before Representative Darrell Issa and committee to answer no doubt some very awkward questions. Unfortunately, all we, the American taxpayers, heard from Lerner was “On the advice of my counsel I respectfully exercise my fifth amendment right and decline to answer that question”.
So we may never know the truth unless Congress decides to hold Lerner in contempt of Congress or promises her some immunity deal. For someone who is so “innocent” of any wrongdoing why does she look and act so guilty? If there is nothing to hide why plead the 5th? The Obama Administration has denied any wrongdoing going so far as to say there is not a smidgen of corruption at the IRS. What a load of rubbish.
Democrats and the White House would have us believe he is not responsible for the IRS scandal just like he’s not responsible for people losing the insurance coverage as a result of Obamacare, or responsible for high unemployment. He’s not responsible for the abject failures of Fast and Furious or Benghazi where our Ambassador and his security detail was left to die at the hands of Muslim hordes. Obama appears to be the Teflon President not guilty or responsible for anything.
Like John Gotti, the dapper Don, who was once also known for his non-sticking qualities, maybe this President will experience just one too many scandals and his minions won’t be willing to take the fall for him. Maybe one day soon Barrack Hussein Obama will be held accountable.
“…The jig is up, the news is out they finally found me. The renegade who had it made retrieved for a bounty. Never more to go astray. The judge’ll have revenge today on the wanted man..”
One can only hope.
Article 1. Section 1. All legislative Powers, herein granted shall be vested in a Congress of the United States, which shall consist of a Senate and a House of Representatives.
Simply translated it means all law making Powers are granted to the Congress. Note that nowhere in the Constitution does it say an Executive is granted powers of law making. It is conspicuously absent. It is important to note that an executive who can arbitrarily make and break laws has put himself by default above the law to the position of monarch or dictator. King George comes to mind. Josef Stalin comes to mind. Kim Jong-Un of North Korea comes to mind. We don’t allow that in this country, or do we?
The President’s actions in ordering changes and delays in implementation for the largely unpopular Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) are good illustrations of how the power of executive orders is being abused for political purposes. Some observers have suggested that the timing of these delays coincidentally fall after the mid-term elections of 2014. The President has side-stepped the only real chance the citizens have of voicing their discontent. When people start getting their insurance cancellation notices, employment terminations, and start experiencing the real negative effects of Obamacare kicking in, their chance to hold their elected representatives responsible will have come and gone. Convenient huh?
Since February 7, 2013 the President has altered, changed or delayed the implementation of the Affordable Care Act by executive fiat thirteen times according to the New York Times. The White House points to the Internal Revenue Code as its justification for the Obamacare delays. They argue that the Internal Revenue Service has the authority to “prescribe all needful rules and regulations” for enforcing the tax code. In July, before the Ways and Means House Subcommittee on Health, J. Mark Iwry, the deputy assistant Treasury secretary for health policy, said this administrative authority has been used to provide transition relief for taxpayers seeking to comply with new legislation, and to provide a wide range of other guidance. In particular, on a number of prior occasions across Administrations, this authority has been used to postpone the application of new legislation when immediate application would have subjected taxpayers to unreasonable administrative burdens or costs.”
Legal experts however state this power to delay is not unlimited. Nicolas Bagley a University of Michigan law professor who studies administrative and health law stated in a recent interview “The administration’s position is an aggressive one, and the legal basis for the delay isn’t altogether secure,” said Mr. Bagley. The same argument the White House is making could be used by future administrations to justify putting off just about any change in the tax code that Congress makes, he said, calling it a potential concern. “
This president has set records for the number of executive orders issued since he occupied the White House. The count is well over 13,000 and growing and is more than any other US president in history. This President has clearly demonstrated a blatant disregard for the US Constitution and the separation of powers, its underlying framework. In his most recent State of the Union address President Obama promised to act if Congress will not. There it was for all to see, his contempt for the process. He will legislate from the White House if Congress will not. He is willing to ignore the Constitution and unilaterally taken it upon himself to legislate by executive order and even more disgusting he received rousing applause in support from his Democrat cohorts for this very un-American idea.
If you haven’t already noticed this country is in trouble. We have a sitting President willing to circumvent the Constitution. We have a sizable percent of the Congress going along with that idea. We have a sycophant press corps and media apparatus willing to go along. Perhaps most disturbing is we have a big percentage of the US population more than willing to surrender their hard fought independence to self-proclaimed government experts in all matters of their life to include healthcare. Does America want a King again? Are we not capable of making decisions for ourselves and so must have a strong leader to look out for us? It sure looks like it doesn’t it?
